The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
