Our Premier Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Top Position.

Initially, this work could seem more like a challenging academic examination than a new popular music record by a musician whose previous hit featured an international K-pop icon. Broken into 4 separate parts and sung in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying classical-tinged opus investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical change, often through the perspective of different women saints. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded openness elsewhere—soars heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among an extensive roll call of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the efforts of other artists seem rather modest.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, with complete praise going to the artist. Although it's not her first project to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its stakes are far higher here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. What really raises her fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. When she is tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy comes forth clearly during the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four minutes. Suddenly, everything falls silent, to reveal we hear a spontaneous giggle followed by a comment before a comically exaggerated orchestral surge thuds down with cartoonish force. The song then segues to the frenetic single driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly know—or even want to know—where it will go to next."

Almost each track ends at a completely distinct place than how it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic style starts out dark and brooding, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the gap between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is no surprise that it has become her first work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language swells around a refrain that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. This feat is repeated by a different powerful ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux is popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of buried treasure that requires time to completely mine but never feels like hard work. While other big pop albums of the year felt like a meager scraps, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flit between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
