Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined behavioural management.
