In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
